Case Study - Ruchill Primary School, Glasgow

Works commenced in March 2010

Japanese Knotweed Solutions were appointed to undertake a full site
survey in February 2010 to assess the extent of the Japanese Knotweed
infestation. Digital surveying equipment was used to locate the areas of
contamination and a full pack of recommendations were produced for the
Client. The results of this survey work qualified that infestation was
amounting to some 3727 square metres.

The site was to be remediated for the new development of Ruchill Primary which was being joined by another school to make a new school called High Park Primary. Three areas of Japanese knotweed were identified on site, one of which was located in a woodland area where a haulage road was proposed to be placed and another alongside a footpath area. Our recommendations were followed and treatment commenced in March 2010 comprising of the following:

Initially, JKSL supervised the felling and removal of trees in the Japanese knotweed areas to ensure no cross contamination occurred on site. Following this, last season's growth was cut, cleared and incinerated on site before a non-residual herbicide was applied to the Japanese knotweed infestations.  Areas of infestation were then excavated and moved to an on-site Waste Management Area lined with a geotextile membrane. Linear Root barriers were installed under the haulage road and footpath areas to prevent plants from migrating back to remediated areas. Where possible the barrier itself was impregnated with a residual herbicide to further reduce the chances of re-growth.

The site will be re-sprayed and monitored for a period of 5 years.

The whole process took two and a half weeks with 6 operatives working on site. Our client was then able to continue with the development.
